“Working Smarter, Not Harder”

The 2024 proposal system is now closed.

Not sure what to propose? Here are some questions to get you started in your planning:

  • How do you differentiate your teaching for diverse learners?
  • How do you incorporate social emotional learning in your classroom and/or prioritize student and teacher mental health?
  • How have you utilized the target language to engage your students in their school community and beyond their school community?
  • What games or topics could you share with your colleagues in a session led in the target language?
  • What activities or approaches have you discovered that help your students the most?
  • Do you have tips and tactics for classroom management?
  • Have you stumbled upon special cultural topics that help engage students?
  • What are some technology applications you use to engage learners in developing language proficiency?

The conference strands for this year’s conference are:

  1. Activities: anything other teachers could replicate or take and modify as part of a project, lesson or unit
  2. Advocacy: work done at school, district, state, or national level to support WL programs, including the Seal of Biliteracy
  3. Assessment: either formative (for teacher’s information) or summative (for a grade); traditional or performance testing, including IPAs
  4. Comprehensible Input: Using CI/TPRS approaches in the WL classroom
  5. Intercultural Communication: teaching understanding of and appropriate interaction with other cultures; discussion of relating cultural practices and products to perspectives
  6. Professional Development: discussion of teacher development strategies
  7. Proficiency-Oriented Instruction: using standards-based and proficiency-oriented approaches
  8. Technology: using technology to enhance WL learning

Remember, the conference is only as good as its presentations. You know a lot, and it’s time to share your knowledge with your fellow members. We are actively seeking presenters to present in the target language they use in their classrooms.

You can submit proposals for either a 50-minute session or a 3-hour workshop. For an explanation of the different presentation types, please read the descriptions at the bottom of this page.

All presenters must register for the conference and be current members of MIWLA.

Thank you for your continued support of MIWLA and your fellow educators. We look forward to seeing your proposals soon!
