Update: Michigan Merit Curriculum world language graduation requirement

In March 2017, the state House passed HB 4315 and HB 4316. This legislation would allow credits in other disciplines, including computer coding or science, visual, performing, or applied arts, or career and technical education to replace world languages credits. These bills have not been taken up by the full Senate. Instead, a Senate Education Subcommittee has been established to review the entirety of the Michigan Merit Curriculum.

MIWLA has provided written testimony to the subcommittee and is monitoring its meetings. We are also collaborating with ACTFL and JNCL-NICLS on strategies to oppose any changes to the world language graduation requirement that the subcommittee may propose.
